No. You do not need a referral from a doctor or another healthcare provider to access counselling with Building You. You can reach out directly to request a free 20-minute consultation and decide whether counselling with us feels like a good fit.
Finding the right counsellor is about more than credentials. You may want to consider their areas of focus, counselling approach, professional experience, availability, and whether you feel comfortable talking with them. You can learn more about each of our counsellors on their individual pages, including their background, experience, areas of focus, and approach to counselling. From there, a free 20-minute consultation gives you a chance to meet your counsellor, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels like a good fit.
Your free 20-minute consultation is an informal conversation about what brings you to counselling, what you're hoping for support with, and what you're looking for in a counsellor. You can also ask questions about your counsellor's approach, experience, availability, or anything else that's important to you. There is no expectation that you commit to counselling afterward. The consultation is simply a chance for both you and your counsellor to see whether working together makes sense.
Your first session is mostly about getting to know you. Your counsellor will ask about what brought you to counselling, what's been happening in your life, what you've already tried, and what you would like to get out of your time together. You don't need to arrive with everything figured out, and you won't be expected to tell your entire life story in one session.
That's completely okay. You might know exactly what you want help with, have several things you want to work through, or simply know that something doesn't feel right.Part of counselling is figuring that out together. Your counsellor can help you make sense of what's been happening and identify where it might be most helpful to start.
